Leena Harjunpää Co is Helsinki based artistic working group founded in 2014. Company creates contemporary dance pieces and other artistic works and its artistic leader is choreographer Leena Harjunpää. Other company members are sound designer and music maker Jouni Tauriainen, lighting and set designer Eero Erkamo and costume designer Joona Huotari-Andreou. Collaborations with other artists are made in certain projects.
The city of Helsinki awarded choreographer-dancer Leena Harjunpää with the title Helsinki Artist of the Year 2022.

What About Death on Leena Harjunpää Co:n nykytanssisoolo, joka käsittelee elämän ja kuoleman rajapintaa. Teos saa löyhästi inspiraationsa Kalevalan hahmosta Tuonen tyttö, joka vie kuolleiden sieluja Tuonelan virran yli Manalaan. Kalevala-teoksessa Tuonen tyttö toimii elämän ja kuoleman rajalla lautturina ja eräänlaisena oppaana. Hän on siis olemassa sekä eläville että kuolleille, ja on tietoinen sekä elämästä että kuolemasta. Tuonen tytön edustama välitila toimii teoksen pohjana. Tämä välitila mahdollistaa tasapainoilun meille tutun ja vielä tuntemattoman maailman välillä, ja sen kautta työryhmä voi käsitellä tuntematonta muutosta. Teoksessa nykytanssin rinnalla kuullaan esiintyjän death growling -äänitekniikalla tuotettua äänenkäyttöä eli örinää.

What About Death is a contemporary dance solo piece by Leena Harjunpää Co. It deals with the border between life and death. The piece is loosely based on a character in the epic poetry collection Kalevala called Tuoni’s daughter (Tuonen tyttö, daughter of the god the Underworld), who serves as a ferryman and a guide between the realms of life and death. Thus she exists to both the living and the dead and is aware of both life and death. The liminal space represented by Tuoni’s daughter serves as the basis of the piece. This space enables the balancing between the world we know and the one we do not yet know, and through that the workgroup can address the unknown change. In addition to contemporary dance the piece incorporates a vocal element produced by the performer with a technique called death growling.
